Antidiabetic drug

Antidiabetic drug

  1. Antidiabetic drug works as lower abnormally high glucose (sugar) levels in the blood, which are characteristic of the endocrine system disorder known as diabetes.
  2. Normally, Diabetes is caused by the body’s inability to produce or respond to the pancreatic hormone insulin. One of the important physiological actions of insulin is to control blood glucose levels.
  3. Glucose is an important nutrient for cellular metabolism, and cells must receive neither too little nor too much. A deficiency in the pancreatic secretion of insulin, or lack of tissue sensitivity to the hormone, leads to diabetes, the primary feature of which is elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycaemia).
  4. Most patients can be classified as having either type I diabetes or type II diabetes.
  5. Type I is characterized by a lack of production of insulin, whereas type II is characterized by tissue resistance to the insulin that is produced bythe pancreas

KARELA, also known as Momordica charantia L., belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae.

Some Properties of Karela:

The properties of karela include:

  1. It might be an antioxidant
  2. It might have hypoglycaemic (lowers the blood sugar level) activity
  3. It might have anti-bacterial (kills bacteria) property
  4. It might have anti-viral (kills viruses) activity

Potential uses of Karela for diabetes:

  1. The Karela extract is traditionally used as vegetable insulin as it might have antioxidant and antidiabetic properties. Its antidiabetic effect is tested in both animals and humans. When tested in an animal model, the entire plant, including fruit pulp and seed, showed potential antidiabetic property. Its fruit was found to have more potential effects on diabetes. It might either control the release of insulin or may hange the metabolism of glucose.
  2. Karela contains a few chemicals, including glycoside, charantin, vicine, karavilosides, and polypeptide-p (plant insulin). These chemicals might improve blood sugar levels by raising the glucose uptake and synthesis of glycogen in the liver, fat, and muscles cells.
  3. Drumstick plant or Moringa oleiferaalso known as Sahjan in Hindi is a very common vegetable in India. But most of us are unaware about the amazing health benefits of this plant. It is known all over the world for its nutritious leafy-greens, flower buds, and mineral-rich green fruit pods. Moringa greens (leaves) are an excellent source of protein. 100 g of fresh raw leaves contain 9.8 g of protein.

Nutritional value

  1. -Fresh pods and seeds are rich in oleic acid and vitamin C.
  2. -It is and one of the richest source of  vitamin A.
  3. -The greens as well as pods also contain good amounts of many vital B-complex vitamins such as folates, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), thiamine (vitamin B-1), riboflavin, pantothenic acid, and niacin.
  4. -The greens (leaves) are one of the finest sources of minerals like calcium, iron, copper, manganese, zinc, selenium, and magnesium

Regulates blood sugar level.

  1. Drumstick contains 18 amino acids which helps in treating many diseases. One important use is its anti-diabetic property. The methanol extract of leaves of Moringa oleifera was evaluated for its anti- diabetic efficacy. Use it in your regular vegetable soups to gain its benefits.

Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus

  1. Jamun seeds are widely used for the treatment of type-2 diabetes mellitus in India and many other countries. Jamun bark, seeds, and leaves are utilized for the management of blood sugar levels. Jamun seeds reduce postprandial sugar level as well.
  2. A rat study found that treatment with Jamun extract for 15 days significantly lowered high blood sugar levels. An active compound named ‘MYCAMINOSE’ present in Jamun works similar to an anti-diabetic drug called GLIBENCLAMIDE and it stimulates the secretion of insulin from pancreatic beta-cells. Furthermore, Jamun seeds lower blood sugar levels by potentiation of insulin effect by either increasing the secretion of insulin or by increasing its release from the bound form. Thus, the hypoglycemic properties of Jamun seeds may be due to its insulin stimulatory effects.
  3. Another interesting research showed that Jamun seed extractinhibits the enzyme that converts carbohydrates into glucose on digestion. Such inhibition prevents a sudden rise in the blood sugar levels after a meal. Fiber present in Jamun seeds such as cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin had a little impact on blood sugar.

Some studies have found that high antioxidant content of Jamun combats oxidative stress and thus reduces hyperglycemia. In addition to this, Jamun also increased the storage of glycogen in liver and muscles and thus reduced the amount of glucose in the blood. Jamun also increases the activity of glucose transporter and thus, helps to transport glucose in the liver and muscles.

In diabetes mellitus, Jamun seeds are used in dosage of 1 to 2 grams thrice daily. For increasing its anti-diabetic and anti-

hyperglycemic effects, the following combinati
